Slovakia has joined a small group of countries shaping the future of artificial intelligence in education together with OpenAI. The new global initiative, Education for Countries, connects governments, universities and research institutions to prepare students and teachers for a world where AI plays a central role.
OpenAI has launched a new global program called Education for Countries to help governments systematically integrate artificial intelligence into their education systems. Slovakia joined the first group of participating countries and now ranks among global leaders in AI adoption in education.
The initiative responds to rapid changes in the labor market. International projections suggest that nearly 40 percent of core job skills will change by 2030, largely due to the rise of artificial intelligence. Schools and universities therefore play a crucial role in preparing young people for this transformation.
Practical use of AI in schools and universities
Education for Countries focuses on the practical use of AI in everyday learning. Schools and universities gain access to advanced AI tools, including ChatGPT Edu, a version of ChatGPT designed specifically for educational institutions.
The initiative also supports research on how artificial intelligence influences learning outcomes and teacher productivity. At the same time, it promotes systematic training for teachers and students in digital and AI skills. Slovakia views participation in the program as an important step toward modernizing its education system.
“Introducing ChatGPT Edu into the preparation of future teachers represents a key step toward building AI literacy and confidence among educators. This cooperation supports our upcoming national AI competency framework for teachers and confirms our long-term commitment to modern and innovative education,” said Education Minister Tomáš Drucker.
What the Education for Countries initiative includes
The program brings several key components that support the integration of artificial intelligence in education:
AI tools for education
Schools gain access to advanced AI capabilities through ChatGPT Edu, a version of ChatGPT tailored for universities and other educational institutions.
Research on learning outcomes
Countries cooperate on research projects that analyze how AI supports learning and affects teacher productivity. The findings can inform public policy and guide future technology development.
Training and certifications from OpenAI
Targeted training programs developed with education ministries and institutions provide teachers and students with practical AI skills. These programs include initiatives such as the OpenAI Academy and certifications based on ChatGPT.
A global partner network
The initiative builds a growing network of governments, researchers and education leaders who share experiences, highlight successful implementations and shape responsible approaches to AI in education.
Slovakia joins global leaders
Within the first wave of participants, Slovakia joined countries such as Estonia, Greece, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Trinidad and Tobago and the United Arab Emirates.
As part of the pilot cooperation, the Ministry of Education secured 20,000 ChatGPT Edu licenses for faculties preparing future teachers for the year 2026. Students in teacher training programs and faculty educators will receive access to these licenses free of charge.
Slovakia’s participation among the leading countries confirms the ministry’s ambition to actively shape the future of education rather than simply react to technological change. Membership in this global network allows Slovakia to share experience, learn from proven solutions and contribute to responsible rules for AI use in schools.
The Education for Countries initiative builds on OpenAI’s goal to expand access to advanced technologies and create opportunities for more people. For Slovakia, it offers a concrete opportunity to strengthen education quality and prepare teachers and students to work confidently with artificial intelligence. The country has now joined those helping define the future of AI in public education.
