The Ministry of Education has launched a strategic partnership with OpenAI to strengthen the digital and AI skills of future teachers. As part of a pilot project, teacher training faculties in Slovakia will receive 20,000 ChatGPT Edu licenses for 2026, available free of charge to students and educators.
The Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth of the Slovak Republic has secured 20,000 ChatGPT Edu licenses for faculties that prepare future teachers. Students in teacher training programs and faculty educators will receive access to these licenses free of charge during 2026.
The project allows future teachers to work with artificial intelligence already during their university studies. They can explore AI tools in a safe and pedagogically meaningful environment. As a result, students gain practical experience and develop digital skills through real use cases, not only through theoretical learning.
Building digital and AI competencies
In 2026, the Ministry of Education will publish a national framework for digital and AI competencies for teachers and school specialists. The framework will define the knowledge and skills educators need when teaching with artificial intelligence and when using AI tools in educational practice.
It will also create conditions for the systematic development of these competencies across the education system.
“We need to rely on real experience from practice and on tools that teachers actually use. Through cooperation with OpenAI, we can test how artificial intelligence can support the preparation of future teachers in a meaningful way,”said Education Minister Tomáš Drucker.
The framework will also guide the modernization of study programs at faculties that train future teachers and support targeted professional development for educators already working in schools.
“Meaningful digital transformation in education begins with teachers. Graduates must enter the profession prepared for a reality in which artificial intelligence plays an increasingly important role in learning,” said State Secretary for Education Róbert Zsembera.
Key benefits of the OpenAI partnership
The pilot cooperation with OpenAI brings several practical benefits for teacher education in Slovakia:
- 20,000 ChatGPT Edu licenses – Free access for teacher training students and faculty educators.
- AI learning resources – Access to educational materials and training developed by OpenAI.
- Secure environment – Testing AI tools without the risk of data misuse.
- Equal access conditions – Other faculties can purchase licenses under the same conditions as the ministry.
Strategic partnership with a global AI leader
ChatGPT Edu is a dedicated version of ChatGPT designed for universities and higher education institutions. It provides access to the latest OpenAI models while prioritizing data protection, security and educational use.
Student and teacher data are not used to train AI models. At the same time, the tool supports lesson preparation, learning activities and reflection on teaching.
“Our cooperation with OpenAI goes beyond providing licenses. For Slovakia, the key benefit lies in building a strategic partnership with a global leader in artificial intelligence,” emphasized Minister Tomáš Drucker.
The agreement also includes expert support and training through OpenAI Academy, opportunities to develop and test AI tools for the education system and research on the pedagogical impact of artificial intelligence.
OpenAI works with governments and institutions worldwide to support education through tools such as ChatGPT Eduand features like Study Mode. Leading universities, including Harvard University and the University of Oxford, already use this technology.
“Educators play a crucial role in ensuring that future generations can fully benefit from artificial intelligence. By providing future teachers in Slovakia with the right tools, training and support, this partnership will help educators use ChatGPT and bring the benefits of AI into classrooms across the country,” said Jayna Devani, International Education Lead at OpenAI.
Part of a broader national strategy
The cooperation with OpenAI aligns with Slovakia’s Plan for Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Education for 2025–2027. It also forms part of a broader strategy to build partnerships with global technology leaders.
In 2025, the Ministry of Education already launched cooperation with Microsoft and NVIDIA. Through these partnerships, the ministry ensures that schools gain access to modern, secure and localized AI tools that respect the Slovak curriculum, national legislation and the real needs of teachers and students.
