Artificial intelligence is transforming higher education. It affects teaching, research, and graduates’ employability in the labour market. Slovak universities are undergoing a systematic transformation aimed at preparing students to work with AI technologies, developing advanced skills, and strengthening Slovakia’s competitiveness in Europe. The integration of AI is being carried out in line with the Responsible Use of AI in Education Plan and with European initiatives in the field of strategic technologies.
AI in Higher Education
in Slovakia
Higher Education in the Age of AI
Universities play a key role in the development of AI and the digital economy. They prepare experts for data-driven professions, advance research and innovation in AI, and shape future teachers, developers, managers and public policy leaders.
Future-Ready Graduate
A graduate understands artificial intelligence within their field, can work with it effectively, and critically assess its outputs. They use AI responsibly as a tool to enhance the quality of their work and as a natural part of their professional identity, not as a substitute for their own thinking.
Key Initiatives
Universities are advancing AI through several initiatives. These include the responsible use of generative AI, new and updated study programmes, the establishment of AI competence centres, STEP calls, and cooperation with the OECD to support the modernisation of higher education.
ChatGPT Edu
From 2026, students and faculty of teacher-training faculties in Slovakia can use ChatGPT Edu. It is a safe, education-adapted version of the tool that supports learning and teaching.
Free Access
From 2026, students and teachers have free access to a secure version of ChatGPT tailored for education. The AI tool supports learning and teaching without using users’ data to train models.
Cooperation with OpenAI
The Ministry of Education’s strategic partnership with OpenAI makes it possible to prepare future teachers to work with artificial intelligence, modernise study programmes, and responsibly integrate AI across the entire education system.
Digital Competences
AI makes sense in education when it is introduced responsibly and built on teachers’ real competences. The use of modern tools helps prepare teachers to effectively integrate digital technologies into their practice.
AI Competence Centres
From September 2026, AI competence centres will be established at the Slovak University of Technology and the Technical University of Košice. These centres will strengthen the role of universities as hubs of expertise in artificial intelligence.
Cutting-Edge Research
They advance high-quality AI research and foster collaboration between technical and non-technical disciplines.
Innovative Programmes
They contribute to the development and innovation of study programmes focused on artificial intelligence and digital technologies.
Connection with Practice
They connect universities with the public sector, industry and local authorities to address real-world challenges.
Open Education
They create and provide open educational resources, methodologies and courses in the field of AI.
Support for Teachers
They strengthen the professional and pedagogical competences of university teachers in working with AI.
University Development
They help universities systematically integrate artificial intelligence into their strategies and governance.
Modern Study Programmes
STEP Call for Universities
The call supports universities in developing new or updated study programmes in strategic fields, including AI. Its aim is to build skills in critical technologies, involve experts from industry and abroad, and better align higher education with labour market needs.
International AI Programme
In 2026, a new international study programme focused on AI will be launched at STU and TUKE. The programme responds to the shortage of AI specialists, and its development will be supported by cooperation with NVIDIA, providing universities with access to cutting-edge infrastructure and strong links to industry.
Artificial Intelligence and Language
The study programme Artificial Intelligence – Natural Language Processing at Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra is an interdisciplinary bachelor’s programme combining computer science and philology. It prepares students to work with AI-driven natural language processing and language technologies.
Support
Framework for the Use of AI in Higher Education
From 2026, the Ministry of Education, in cooperation with the OECD, will launch a project to support universities in implementing artificial intelligence. The project will focus on the use of AI in teaching and on improving the efficiency of university administration. It will include a nationwide seminar featuring examples of good practice and a platform for sharing experience, to be held on 6 March 2026.
Universities for the 21st Century
Universities need simpler and more modern rules to better serve students, faculty and society. The new legislation gives them greater autonomy, less bureaucracy and a stronger ability to respond to labour market needs. Students will benefit from more flexible study paths, stronger links between theory and practice, and new opportunities for shorter programmes. The changes support innovation, artificial intelligence and higher-quality research.
